Each location has significance in 'Tiger Zinda Hai': Director

Image
Salman Khan-starrer " Tiger Zinda Hai " has been shot across five different countries, but each location lent itself to a turning point in the film's story, says director Ali Abbas Zafar. Shot across various destinations in Austria, Greece, Morocco, Abu Dhabi and India, the sequel of Kabir Khan's "Ek Tha Tiger" will bring back "Ek Tha Tiger" Salman and actress Katrina Kaif as intelligence agents Tiger and Zoya, who travel to five different countries, fighting against the odds to fulfill their life-threatening mission. "To meet the scale of the film, we had to travel to four different countries for different reasons. Certain landscapes needed to become a part of the film, so we had to go to Austria to get the snow-covered mountains. We also had to go to Morocco to feature crucial fight sequences of horseback riding. The country's landscape and topography brings a certain texture to these sequences," Zafar said in a stateme

Aadhaar-demat account linking: Sebi's diktat spooks overseas investors

Image
It is not just domestic investors but also foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) who are grappling with the Securities and Exchange Board of India ’s (Sebi’s) diktat mandating linking Aadhaar with “all demat accounts”. In August, Sebi had directed the stock exchanges to cease the accounts of all the clients who failed to submit Aadhaar details by December 31. Prima facie, the circular appeared to be aimed at domestic investors. However, ambiguous wording has spooked FPIs, who have sought clarity from Sebi on whether the circular would be applicable to them too. “ FPIs, through their custodians, have written to Sebi, seeking clarity on the Aadhaar issue. The instructions issued by Sebi in this regard are not clear. We want the regulator to provide explicit exemptions so that there are no last-minute surprises,” said a source who has a direct knowledge of the development. Aadhaar is a unique-identity number issued to all Indian residents based on their biometric and demo

iPhone X debut: Will slow supply dampen Apple's hopes in India?

Image
After facing a lacklustre response to iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus globally, including in India, Apple has now placed its bet on successful delivery of "super premium" iPhone X that aims for a scheduled arrival on November 3. In the past few days, several media reports have claimed that Apple is facing a huge supply gap primarily for two reasons: difficulties in assembling the new facial identification software and 3D camera, and "off the charts" pre-orders for iPhone X after the Apple fraternity didn't make the expected beeline for iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. The scenario suggests that people will have to wait long before they can grab an iPhone X. Analysts have already warned that the stock on hand is scarce, owing to constrained supply of key iPhone X components. The advanced depth-sensing camera system in iPhone X requires parts that only a few manufacturers can produce. The iPhone X, which marks the 10th anniversary of the device, costs Rs 89,000 fo

After its success in mobile telephony, Reliance Jio is preparing to disrupt the market once again. This time in the fixed broadband and television (TV) space. The Mukesh Ambani-led company will launch high-speed fibre to the home (FTTH) broadband in more than 30 cities early next year, to offer TV as well as internet to subscribers, it is learnt. In the first phase itself, at least 50 million households will be offered the service, according to sources in the know. Jio has already spread out over 300,000 kilometres of optic fibre (half of which is through a long-term contract with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications). In fact, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, in his annual general meeting speech this year, indicated that Jio was on track to offer high-speed broadband se

L&T, Godrej, HAL, Isro to sign pact to build PSLV rockets

Larsen & Toubro , Godrej and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd will join a consortium, being put together by Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), to build Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLVs). India’s space agency, which has designed the rocket, has been building and launching satellites,   including probes for the moon and Mars missions, on its own. It has more work on its plate to meet the country’s requirement of building heavier rockets and reusable spacecraft that can carry bigger satellites and a capsule that will eventually put a man in space. There is a huge spurt in demand to launch smaller satellites, those as light as 1 kg, with a lifespan of two to three years. But there aren’t enough rockets to carry these. The PSLV, following its successful 104 satellite launch in February, has emerged as

Image
A little over a month after entering into the digital payment ecosystem in India, Google’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) app Tez has racked up 7.5 million users who have made over 30 million transactions. In a call with investors on Friday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that he was “really excited about the potential this (Tez) brings for India's mostly cash-based economy” while also revealing the growth figures for the app. While Google has not been able to demolish rival BHIM’s record of getting 10 million installs in just 10 days thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi backing, but it’s a commendable feat considering that Tez has lacked several features at launch. But coming into the UPI payments space a little more than a year late, Google has demonstrated that there still is space for growth in India’s digital payments ecosystem. Tez also sets the precedent for Google to invest in more region specific products, which it has rarely done before. “ We see

Apple, Samsung face fresh iPhone damages trial: US judge

Image
A US judge has ordered a new trial to determine how much Samsung Electronics should pay Apple for copying the look of the iPhone. US District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California issued an order late on Sunday, 10 months after the US Supreme Court set aside a $399 million award against Samsung for mimicking the iPhone’s look for its Galaxy and other devices. The Supreme Court said damages could be based only on parts of a device that may have infringed patents, not necessarily the entire device. Koh said the jury instructions at the Apple-Samsung trial “did not accurately reflect the law” and may have prejudiced Samsung by preventing jurors from considering whether any infringement covered “something other than the entire phone.”  The $399 million is part of a $548 million payment that Samsung made to Apple in December 2015. Apple had argued that no new trial was warranted, and that the $399 million award should be confirmed. It did not immediately respond on

Tech giants are paying huge salaries for scarce AI talent

Image
Silicon Valley’s start-ups have always had a recruiting advantage over the industry’s giants: Take a chance on us and we’ll give you an ownership stake that could make you rich if the company is successful. Now the tech industry’s race to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) may render that advantage moot — at least for the few prospective employees who know a lot about AI. Tech’s biggest companies are placing huge bets on artificial intelligence, banking on things ranging from face-scanning smartphones and conversational coffee-table gadgets to computerised health care and autonomous vehicles. As they chase this future, they are doling out salaries that are startling even in an industry that has never been shy about lavishing a fortune on its top talent. Typical AI specialists, including both PhDs fresh out of school and people with less education and just a few years of experience, can be paid from $300,000 to $500,000 a year or more in salary and company stock, acco
