IPL 2019 RCB vs RR Preview: Can RCB spoil the playoff equation for Royals?

Image
In match 49 of the VIVO Indian Premier League 2019 (IPL 2019), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will host Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Royal Challengers Bangalore will look to give their forgettable campaign a semblance of respectability with just two remaining matches while Rajasthan Royals would look to secure a wim to keep faint IPL 2019 playoffs hopes alive. Rajasthan is at the seventh position in IPL 2019 Points Table. Rajasthan, with 10 points from 12 games, still have a theoretical chance to make it to the playoffs, provided they do not lose any of their remaining two matches. Also, they would require table-toppers Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals to defeat their respective opponents. 'Avengers: Endgame' on way to be first Rs 300-crore Hollywood film in India

Image
Marvel Studios’ Avengers : Endgame is inching towards the Rs 300-crore mark after it collected Rs 157.2 crore (net after tax) at the Indian box office in the first weekend of its release. Given the demand, the good reviews and word of mouth, distributors and exhibitors feel the movie is set to enter the Rs 300-crore club within 10 days of its release. Endgame has marginally surpassed Avengers: Inifnity War’s (2018) first-week collection (Rs 156.64) in just three days. This also puts the movie in the league of some of the most successful Indian movies. Suniel Wadhwa, independent distributor and box office analyst, says while the film was expected to do well at the box office, the collections have been better than expected. “Earlier, it was unconceivable that a Hollywood film with dubbed versions could deliver a collection above Rs 100 crore in the first weekend. Today, it’s a reality.” “ Forecasting Endgame’s lifetime collection is near impossible at this point. However, should

92 trips to 57 countries since 2014: Here's what PM Narendra Modi achieved

Image
As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi bids for reelection, his party has said his skillful diplomacy on the world stage has increased India’s global stature and brought in a flood of investment. But what exactly have Modi’s foreign travels achieved? With 92 trips to 57 countries since coming to power in May 2014, Modi has flown abroad nearly twice as much as his predecessor Manmohan Singh in five years. While Modi’s visits have won praise from supporters for boosting India’s global profile, the costs associated with them -- and the optics of traveling abroad so often in a country where many farmers are struggling -- have triggered some criticism. The main opposition Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused Modi of ignoring problems at home. A closer look at Modi’s trips show that while some have yielded vague agreements that may not develop into anything substantial, doubters may still be exaggerating the negatives. Summit meetings accounted for roughly a thir

Travelling to a malaria endemic area? Some simple steps to keep you safe

Image
Every death from malaria is a tragedy. But many infections can be prevented. This is particularly true for holidaymakers, travellers, or people visiting their families in malaria endemic areas. All they need to do is follow some very simple rules. Malaria is a complicated disease – I should know, after studying it for more than 30 years – but the solutions to avoiding and treating it can be as simple as “ABCD”. If the basics of prevention are followed, a great deal of unnecessary illness and mortality can be avoided. Avoidance to detection A is for Awareness and Avoidance of malaria risk Several factors influence your chance of getting malaria in a particular area. Understanding these can help you to avoid or least minimise the risk. The first question to ask is: how much malaria normally occurs in the area, and when? The answer will depend on altitude and climate – generally the lower, warmer and more humid the place, the more suitable it is for malaria vectors, the Anopheles

Beware of bots: Automation could wipe out almost half of all jobs in 20 yrs

Image
Automation, robots and globalisation are rapidly changing the workplace and governments must act fast and decisively to counter the effects or face a worsening of social and economic tensions, the OECD warned. Almost half of all jobs could be wiped out or radically altered in the next two decades due to automation, the Paris-based group said in a report on Tuesday. According to OECD Labor Director Stefano Scarpetta, the pace of change will be “startling.” Safety nets and training systems built up over decades to protect workers are struggling to keep up with the “megatrends” changing the nature of work, the OECD said. While some workers will benefit as technology opens new markets and increases productivity, young, low-skilled, part-time and gig-economy workers are vulnerable. “ Deep and rapid structural changes are on the horizon, bringing with them major new opportunities but also greater uncertainty among those who are not well equipped to grasp them,” Scarpetta said. IPL 2019 CSK vs MI Preview: Mumbai look to cement a place for playoffs

Image
In match 44 of VIVO Indian Premier League 2019 (IPL 2019), Chennai Super Kings will host Mumbai Indians at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai Friday. After MS Dhoni's team defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad on Shane Watson's unbeaten 96, they would be looking to continue the momentum as the top the IPL 2019 Points Table with 16 points. The visitors, currently in third spot with 12 points from 10 games, lost against Rajasthan Royals and will be keen to keep themselves in the hunt for the playoffs. After Watson, CSK hope Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav find form before the playoffs. Mumbai would look to add two more points with a win and cement its place for the playoffs as the side has been inconsistent and a loss could cause them some worry. Mumbai Indians have a long tail of batsmen and the onus would be onc e again on Chennai's bowlers to pick wickets. Read Complete Article

Malaria still a big killer: Epigenetics is key to finding its Achilles heel

Image
Malaria has been a terrible disease throughout human history. Deaths actually peaked over five million in the 1930s and it spread all over the world. Following a first global eradication programme launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) with massive spraying campaigns using the dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) insecticide, Europe was declared malaria free in 1975. Today, we face a very different scenario. There has been a major reduction in the malaria burden, from millions to about half a million deaths a year in 2018. Even so, malaria is still one of the three leading causes of death in developing countries. And it’s estimated that 40% of the world’s population (more than 200,000) is at risk. In addition, two thirds of malaria deaths are children under the age of five. Africa is home to 70% of the world’s malaria cases and 90% of deaths. What we’ve learnt from Africa is that malaria and poverty are intimately connected. The lack of basic sanitary services and hygi

SC refuses to interfere with EC order banning Modi biopic till May 19

Image
The Supreme Court Friday refused to interfere with the Election Commission's order banning release of the biopic on PM Narendra Modi until May 19. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said it was not inclined to entertain the application filed by producers of biopic challenging the EC's order. "What survives in this now?" the bench, also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna, said. The counsel, appearing for producers, told the bench that the EC's order is contrary to the clearance given to the movie by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). "The issue is whether the movie can be exhibited at this time. The Election Commission has taken a decision. We are not inclined to entertain this," the bench said. The poll panel told the court that movie should be released only after the Lok Sabha elections got over. Elections2019

WHO says maximum one-hour screen time per day for kids under 5: Key points

Image
Young children should not spend more than an hour a day watching television and videos or playing computer games and infants less than one year old should not be exposed to electronic screens at all, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday. Limiting, and in some cases eliminating, screen time for children under the age of 5 will result in healthier adults, said WHO, adding that quality sedentary time spent in interactive non-screen-based activities with a caregiver, such as reading, storytelling, singing and puzzles, is very important for child development. Taking away iPads and other electronic devices is only part of the solution. Children under 5 should also get more exercise and sleep in order to develop better habits, said WHO. Failure to meet current physical activity recommendations is responsible for more than 5 million deaths globally each year across all age groups. India TikTok ban causing $500,000 daily loss, risks jobs: China's Bytedance

Image
India's ban on popular Chinese video app TikTok is resulting in "financial losses" of up to $500,000 a day for its developer, Beijing Bytedance Technology Co, and has put more than 250 jobs at risk, the company said in a court filing seen by Reuters. TikTok allows users to create and share short videos with special effects and is one of the world's most popular apps. It has been downloaded by nearly 300 million users so far in India, out of more than 1 billion downloads globally, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower. Earlier this month, an Indian state court ordered the federal government to prohibit its downloads, saying the app was encouraging pornography. Acting upon instructions from the federal IT ministry, Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google last week removed TikTok from their India app stores. The developments have dealt a blow to the India growth plans of Bytedance, which is backed by Japan's SoftBank Group Corp and by private equity. Byte

SoftBank eyes $2-3 billion investment in Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio

Image
Japan’s SoftBank is looking at buying a $2-3 billion stake in Reliance Jio, Reliance Industries’ telecom subsidiary and the country’s fastest-growing telco. “ For the past two years, our conversations with investors have highlighted the expectations of SoftBank investing in Jio and hence the news flow is not surprising,” wrote Pinakin Parekh, analyst, JP Morgan, in a report to investors. Mukesh Ambani -led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is interested in deleveraging its balance sheet, and reports of SoftBank’s Jio investment follow last week’s news that Saudi Aramco is in talks with RIL to pick up to 25 per cent in the latter’s refining and petchem business for $10-15 billion. According to reports, SoftBank is conducting due diligence for its investment through SoftBank Vision Fund. Spokespersons of both Reliance Jio and SoftBank declined to comment on the matter. “ What would be important from a stock price perspective is how much SoftBank puts in, what is the implie

Reviewers' backlash forces Samsung to delay Galaxy Fold events in China

Image
Smartphone maker Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has postponed media events for its Galaxy Fold planned for this week in Hong Kong and Shanghai, a company official said, days after reviewers of the foldable handset reported defective samples. The official did not elaborate on reasons or rescheduling. Instead of plaudits ahead of the phone's launch on April 26 in the United States, the South Korean conglomerate has been blighted by technology journalists reporting breaks, bulges and blinking screens after using their samples for as little as a day. Samsung said it received "a few" reports of damage to the displays of samples of the $1,980 handset, raising the spectre of the combustible Galaxy Note 7 three years ago which the firm ultimately pulled from shelves at massive cost. The reviewers' reports of broken screens went viral online and prompted the creation of hashtag #foldgate on Twitter. Read Complete Article

Evenings are more productive for working out: study

Image
A recent study suggests that evening work out can be more productive. The details were published in the Journal of Cell Metabolism. Research teams looked at the association between time of day and exercise performance primarily in mice. Because mice are nocturnal, one thing they had to do was translate mouse timing to human timing, by distinguishing between the active phase and resting phase of the mice rather than using numbers on the clock. Asher's group started by putting mice in treadmills at different times of day within their active phase. They examined the exercise capacity of mice upon different exercise intensities and regimens and found that overall exercise performance is substantially better in the "mouse evening" compared to the morning hours. These daily differences were diminished in mice that had mutant clocks -- supporting a potential role of the clock in the observed variance in exercise performance. Read Complete Article

India's widespread food insecurity damaging children's ability to learn

Image
There has been an impressive expansion in school enrolment in India since the early 2000s. Despite this, India is in the midst of a “learning crisis”, with improvements in learning lagging behind increases in enrolment. Worldwide, India also has one of the highest rates of child undernutrition and household food insecurity – that is, inadequate or inconsistent access to enough safe and nutritious food to sustain a healthy life. Both of these issues have negative implications for the long-term health, well-being and productivity of young people, as well as for the economy more broadly. In our recent study, we used survey data from the Young Lives study of childhood poverty to examine whether there is a link between food insecurity and learning for Indian adolescents. There are good theoretical reasons why learning and food insecurity may be linked. When households experience food insecurity, they may have to make difficult decisions in order to meet the family’s nutritio

History suggests rupee is set for a hangover post 2019 Lok Sabha elections

Image
India’s rupee has been Asia’s best-performing currency in the past three months but history suggests it will weaken once the current general election is over. The currency has shown a tendency to flip directions after polls have been completed, according to a study by Edelweiss Securities Pvt, based on the past three election cycles. The currency has tended to reverse course when it has rallied ahead of the vote, said Madhavi Arora, an economist at the brokerage in Mumbai. Seasonality is set to be an issue as well. The month of May, when election results are usually announced, has proven to be an unfavorable one for the rupee. It has fallen eight times in that month during the past nine years, dropping an average of 2.2 percent. The exception was 2014, when Modi swept into power with the biggest mandate in more than three decades. History also shows election years tend to see increased inflows from overseas. While foreign buying will depend on a mix of factors, including

$2000 Galaxy Fold's screen broke after few days of use for some reviewers

Image
Samsung's new Galaxy Fold , a splashy $1,980 phone that opens into a tablet, is malfunctioning for some journalist reviewers after only a day or two of use, according to posts on social media on Wednesday. The problem seems to be related to the unit's screen either cracking or flickering, according to Twitter posts by technology journalists from Bloomberg, The Verge and CNBC who received the phone this week for review purposes. The Galaxy Fold officially goes on sale on April 26 in the United States. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd did not respond to several requests for comment. The South Korean company's Galaxy Fold resembles a conventional smartphone but opens like a book to reveal a second display the size of a small tablet at 7.3 inches (18.5 cm). Although Galaxy Fold and Huawei's Mate X foldable phones are not expected to be big sellers, the new designs were hailed as framing the future of smartphones this year in a field that has seen few surprises since App

Why India's ban on Video app TikTok is unnerving the tech industry

Image
An Indian ban on downloading TikTok , one of the world's most popular mobile applications, has heightened industry worries that technology companies could now face increased scrutiny and regulatory challenges in one of their most important markets. TikTok, which allows users to create and share videos with special effects, has become a sensation in India, where it has been downloaded by nearly 300 million users so far, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower, out of more than 1 billion installs globally. Its runaway popularity has attracted criticism from some politicians, however, in a largely conservative society that can have a low boiling point for even moderately racy content. In the case of TikTok, 15-second dance clips and memes dominate the platform, although some videos do show youngsters, some scantily clad, lip-syncing and grooving to popular tunes. Local media have also reported several accidental deaths when users attempted to make videos with knives and

JustDial data leak exposed personal details of 100 million users: IT expert

Justdial, a company that provides local search for different services in India over voice calls and internet, suffered a data breach last week that compromised the personal details of 100 million users, according to independent cyber-security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia. An Economic Times report on Thursday quoted Rajaharia as saying that the company has not been able to fix the breach. He told ET that the breach did not affect a newer, revamped version of the website. In a Facebook post, the cybersecurity expert claimed that the attack put at risk data of users who called JustDial's customer care number '88888 88888'. Inc42 quoted a senior JustDial executive on Monday as saying that the company is investigating the alledged loopholes in its database and that the company's systems are foolproof. Here are some common myths that compromise good sleep, health

People often say they can get by on five or fewer hours of sleep. Some believe that snoring is harmless and that having a drink helps you to fall asleep. According to a recent study, these are among the most widely held myths about sleeping that not only shape poor habits but may also pose a significant health threat. As part of the study, a team of researchers reviewed more than 8,000 websites to identify the 20 most common assumptions about sleep. With a team of sleep medicine experts, they ranked them based on whether each could be dispelled as a myth or supported by scientific evidence, and on the harm that the myth could cause. "Sleep is a vital part of life that affects our productivity, mood, and general health and well-being. Dispelling myths about sleep promotes healthier sleep habits which, in turn, promote overall better health," said Rebecca Robbins, lead researcher of the study published in the Journal of Sleep Health. The claim by some people that
