I fall under a category of neutral actors: Rana Daggubati

Image
Actor Rana Daggubati says he falls in a category of neutral actors, and has always believed in getting involved in content with no regional barriers. "I interestingly fall under a category of neutral actors and filmmakers who have been constantly involved in content with no regional barriers," Rana told IANS. "'Baahubali' was really the film that broke most barriers of what regional cinema can do nationally. I hope that more films like these are made, and can make the impact that 'Baahubali' was able to," added the actor, who is pushing content of all type with his Kwan South, a joint venture with Kwan Entertainment. The actor, who has worked in the southern film industry as well as in Bollywood, feels it is important to find content that is nationally applicable. "I was able to find that very early into my career because I started working in the films at a very young age. In the process of filmmaking, language is only one of t

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has made it to the list of top 100 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2018. The last time it was featured was in 2011. The annual ranking highlights the top 100 global university brands, which now includes IISc in the 91-100 band. Commenting on the rankings, Phil Baty, editorial director of Global Rankings for THE, said, “Only 100 institutions in the world make it to this annual list of the most powerful university brands, so it is a highly significant achievement to be included — and fantastic to see an Indian presence this year.” The list was compiled from a globally representative survey of more than 10,000 senior academics. IISc was the only Indian institute to have made it this year. “ That prestige – that ‘brand’ – is vital for any university in attracting the necessary talent to allow it to compete and thrive, as well as drawing in strategic partners, philanthropy and investment. One exporter on the condition of anonymity said for a particular grade of a shrimp the price is around $5.40 per kilogram of shrimp presently which 30 per cent lower than year and major fall was seen in last few months. Electric vehicles could increase net carbon emissions in India: IEA

Image
The International Energy Agency has said there will be a net increase in carbon emissions due to electric vehicles when considering life-cycle emissions in countries, like India and China, which have a carbon-intensive power generation mix. In its report on electric vehicle, IEA says under the New Policies Scenario, India will reach an 11 per cent EV market share by 2030 (for all modes combined, excluding two- and three-wheelers where the share will be 70 per cent). Under the EV30@30 Scenario outlook, India’s electric mobility transition could develop a favourable policy environment and achieve a 25 per cent EV market share by 2030 across all modes, except two and three-wheelers where over 70 per cent of sales will be electric by the same year. "This transition can be supported with the adoption of car and ride-sharing systems, suggesting that the country to some extent may leapfrog from a low personal vehicle ownership rate to shared mobility while access to motorise

'Kaala' trailer proves Rajinikanth is serious about 'netagiri'

Image
Rajinikanth , the superstar is alive and kicking in the trailer of his new film, rather racially referred to as "Kaala". ' Kaala ' Rajinikanth, it seems, is the son of the soil. Dark (kaala) thoughts are vanquished as he seethes against those who toil to torment the farmer. He rages against the landlord played by Nana Patekar, who it is quite clear from the trailer's first shot, is a formidable adversary for our hero. Rajinikanth not only plays the hero of the farmers a la Aamir Khan in "Lagaan" without the dhoti, he also takes on Nana as only he can. Interestingly, Nana plays a nuanced, scholarly adversary. So we can safely assume that this time Rajinikanth's herogiri won't be offset by plain unalloyed evil. This is a more complex villain. Nana addresses the masses and refuses to be a snarling lip-curling villain. That he insisted on learning the Tamil language from scratch for this part is a measure of the actor's diligent commi

Jacqueline, Salman draw flak for hugging a kid

Image
Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez are facing the ire of the netizens for forcing an 'unwilling child' to hug Jacqueline. Jacqueline had taken to social media to share a clip of the stars' appearance on a reality TV show where the 'Sultan' star can be seen persuading a young boy, a contestant, to give her a hug. The two were present on the show to promote their upcoming film 'Race 3.' While Salman and Jacqueline took it all in fun, this did not go down well with their fans and followers. "Negating consent and all that we are teaching kids about how their bodies are theirs. *slow clap*," wrote one user. "Kid of 5 or 6 says he doesn't want to hug Jacqueline Fernandez . Celeb panel laughs. "Aise kaise?" Repeatedly he says he doesn't feel like hugging her. Body language suggests same. Salman Khan forces him to hug her. Forces him to "tightly hug her" once again. Consent be damned,&

'Sanju' trailer: A rollercoaster ride of emotions

Image
The much-awaited trailer of the biopic, ' Sanju ' is here and it offers an intriguing mix of emotions, comedy, drama and most importantly, shock. The gripping trailer gave an insight into the life of Sanjay Dutt aka Sanju baba - be it his girlfriends, his drug addiction, his career, his conviction, downfall, his sentence, his acquittal, and then his uprising once again. While most of the public will be aware of the events, director Rajkumar Hirani brought the stories behind such events to the forefront. He dug to the bottom of real-life story behind the façade of the illustrious actor. Ranbir looks amazingly convincing in the role of Dutt. The younger actor took to the latter's persona like a charm. The trailer also touched upon his equation with various members of his life, portrayed by Paresh Rawal, Sonam Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Manisha Koirala, and Anushka Sharma. There were some disturbing scenes from Dutt's jail term which made the audience a

Belkin Boost-Up wireless charging pad: Tangle-free charging for smartphones

Image
Pick up any flagship phone these days, and it features wireless charging. But there’s a catch: Almost no phone manufacturer bundles in a wireless charger. Thus, the customer, after paying big bucks for a phone with myriad features is often unable to use one of the most-touted ones. A quick search on any shopping site reveals a wide range of wireless chargers, more specifically those which adhere to the Qi charging format. But most are from unknown Chinese manufacturers, and thus, there’s no guarantee about what they would turn out to be. Thankfully, accessories major Belkin has a solution. The Boost-up Wireless Charging Pad (Rs 2,999) is compatible with most modern smartphones. I used it with the Apple iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy Note8 . Initially, I faced a problem. The iPhone X had absolutely no charge, so I was apprehensive about whether I had placed it properly. Thankfully, there’s a green LED that lights up once the phone is aligned right. The charger comes in

WhatsApp to hasten payments services to 200 million Indians

Image
Facebook is set to offer its WhatsApp payment services to the whole of India as early as next week in an attempt to win market share, even though its partners aren’t all ready, said people familiar with the matter. The messaging app will partner HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank to process the transfers, and State Bank of India will join once it has the necessary systems in place, the people said. Facebook was aiming for a full rollout with four partners but decided to go ahead with just three as its rivals were racing ahead, the people said, asking not to be named as the information isn’t public. The entry of Whatsapp into India’s payments space has been likened to WeChat, which reshaped payments in China when it expanded beyond messaging. The pilot version of WhatsApp Pay — started with 1 million users in February — received rave reviews, threatening the market share of incumbents Google Tez and Alibaba-backed Paytm, which lack the benefits of a social network. “ Wha

IPL 2018 Final Highlights: Watson hands Dhoni's Chennai a fairytale victory

Exercise your legs for healthy brain

Image
Exercising your legs is necessary for a healthy brain and nervous system, said a new study that showed that neurological health depends on signals sent by leg muscles to the brain and vice versa. The results gave doctors new clues as to why patients with motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy and other neurological diseases often rapidly decline when their movement becomes limited. Reducing exercise makes it difficult for the body to produce new nerve cells -- some of the very building blocks that allows one to adapt to stress and challenges in life. "Our study supports the notion that people who are unable to do load-bearing exercises -- such as patients who are bed-ridden, or even astronauts on extended travel -- not only lose muscle mass, but their body chemistry is altered at the cellular level and even their nervous system is adversely impacted," said Raffaella Adami from the University of Milan, in Italy. During the study,

The domestic cellphone industry has flagged possible duty evasion in imports of the completely built unit (CBU) of mobile phones, suspected of Chinese origin, from Asean countries under the free trade route. In a letter to Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, Indian Cellular Association (ICA) said there is a possibility of customs duty evasion in import of CBUs from Asean countries at zero duty as the mobile devices contain more than 65 per cent material from non-Asean origin. Government has imposed 20 per cent import duty on mobile phones to promote indigenous manufacturing of the devices as they have security implications. “ We wish to bring to your notice the possibility of substantial case of customs duty evasion in the case of import of CBU of mobile phones from Asean countries, specially Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand, at nil rate,” ICA National President Pankaj Mohindroo said in the letter.
