Other than junk food, here's another key factor in childhood obesity

Image
Yes, high calorie and junk food are among the leading causes of obesity; but a new study has presented yet another key reason behind obesity in children. Gut bacteria and its interactions with immune cells and metabolic organs, including fat tissue is found to play a key role in childhood obesity, according to a new study published in the journal Obesity Reviews. Not only the gut, but the mother's health, diet, exercise level, antibiotic use, among others can also pose as a risk factor in a child getting obese. "The medical community used to think that obesity was a result of consuming too many calories. However, a series of studies over the past decade has confirmed that the microbes living in our gut are not only associated with obesity but also are one of the causes," said lead author Hariom Yadav, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist. Obesity is increasing at a 2.3 per cent rate e

An athleisure shoe proves to be sneaker-trainer that does surprising things

Image
The Reebok Sole Fury is a celebratory release to mark the 25th anniversary of a coveted piece of sneaker history, the Reebok InstaPump. Like its predecessor, this one too has something interesting happening around the middle outer sole. The Sole Fury is ridiculously lightweight. No wonder it’s missing a piece. A chunk of the outsole is cut from the arch side, splitting its EVA midsole into two. Not only does the wacky engineering make the Sole Fury among the lightest performance sneakers ever produced — 230 grams for a size 8 – it also increases the flexibility of the midsole. A graphite plate running through the midsole ensures that stability is not compromised. The neoprene upper and asymmetrical eyelets give the pair an edgy look. The bootie construction is not as snug as you would expect from a knit upper, but it’s hardly necessary in a sneaker. Reebok says the Sole Fury is an athleisure pair, but after walking and casually sprinting in the “clover green” colourway, I was

Any idea how to tackle 'deepfake videos'? Twitter wants your suggestion

Image
Twitter is working on a new policy to tackle deepfake videos on its platform that will address the content which could threaten someone's physical safety or lead to offline harm. The micro-blogging platform has asked its users how best the synthetic and manipulated videos can be addressed. "Deepfakes" are video forgeries that make people appear to be saying things they never did, like the popular forged videos of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that went viral recently. "We're always updating our rules based on how online behaviours change. We're working on a new policy to address synthetic and manipulated media on Twitter, but first we want to hear from you,' Twitter said on Monday. "We need to consider how synthetic media is shared on Twitter in potentially damaging contexts; we want to listen and consider your perspectives in our policy development process and we want to be transparent about our approac

G Suite users will now have single profile photo for Google, Gmail

Image
Google has started combining G Suite users' Gmail photos with their Google account profile photos. "We are combining the Gmail photo with the Google account profile photo for G Suite users. Now, when you go to change this setting in Gmail, you'll be directed to the 'About me' section of your Google profile settings to set your profile picture," the company said in a statement on Monday. Currently, profile pictures set in Gmail are only displayed in Gmail. This means a profile picture in Gmail may be different than the Google account profile photo, which can make it difficult to know which picture will be displayed where. This new change simplifies things by allowing a user to set a single profile picture in one place and then displaying that single photo across all Google apps. "When you visit Settings > General > My Picture in Gmail on the web, you will be directed to change your picture in the 'About me' section of your Google

Image
How long does a cancer diagnosis take? Six months, according to Bipin Jana, 45, whose eight-year-old son Parmeshwar has stage-4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. That is how long it took the family, travelling 2,000 km across West Bengal, New Delhi and finally, Mumbai, to get an effective diagnosis and start treatment. Parmeshwar is currently undergoing chemotherapy at the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai, India’s foremost cancer treatment centre. Almost half (43.6 per cent) of the children with cancer admitted here had to travel over 1,300 km to reach the hospital, records showed. Up to 10 per cent travelled over 2,200 km and 20 per cent had undergone alternative or incomplete treatments before reaching TMH. With timely diagnosis, children with cancer have a high rate of survival. If he lived in a high-income country, Parmeshwar would have had a 90 per cent chance of recovery. Apple iPhone 11 Pro: Finally, an iPhone with Android-like imaging prowess

Image
American technology giant Apple recently launched three smartphones under its iPhone 11 series — the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max . Of these, the iPhone 11 seems the most interesting for its ‘affordable’ price tag and the upgrades it has got over predecessor iPhone XR. The most premium upgrades, however, have come to the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone Pro Max — you have to make a difficult choice between them to experience the best from Apple. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are identical twins with variance only in display size, dimensions, and battery. You could expect both devices to offer a similar experience. We reviewed the iPhone 11 Pro, and here are our thoughts on how it fares on smartphone parameters like design, display, imaging and performance: Design The iPhone 11 Pro gives you a déjà vu feeling. And why shouldn’t it — it looks exactly like the iPhone X, Apple’s ten-year anniversary special that came in 2017. Not much has changed in the iPhone

Air Tamer A-310 review: Great idea, but not yet an answer to air pollution

Image
Air purifiers have become integral to people’s needs these days, especially in major cities, thanks to the scourge of high pollution levels in recent times. The situation in Delhi during winters is particularly alarming and people earlier were forced to turn to air purifiers, which did not come cheap and you could not carry them with you. But that was earlier; technology is now moving towards what is called ‘personal air purifiers’, and that might change things for good. We came across the Air Tamer A-310 , a personal air purifier launched recently, and reviewed it to see if these devices could substitute the traditional air purifiers and answer the issue of air pollution in cities with an equal effectiveness. Here’s what we found: The Air Tamer A-310 is completely portable — it fits in your pocket, so you can carry it with ease. It is a lightweight device and has a panel that looks like a display but is not. At the bottom, it has a regular USB jack to charge the device, whi

Alcatel 3T10 review: Easy on pocket, but gives only an average performance

Image
Unlike in case of smartphones , deciding whether to go for a budget device or shell out heavily on a safe premium one is not always easy when you are out in the market for a tablet. But there have come a few promising but inexpensive tablets in recent times, making the choice somewhat easier for users. The Alcatel 3T10 is one such tablet. Priced at Rs 11,999, this 10-inch tablet comes with a Bluetooth speaker that also acts as the charging stand. When used separately, the tablet's dual speakers with 5W drivers give a considerable output. Also, the speaker has a 2000mAh battery that lasts 4-5 hours on full charge. This tablet runs on Android 9.0 and has Google Assistant pre-installed on it. Its 10-inch IPS display with an 800 x 1200 resolution leaves thick bezels around it. We found the display to be a bit dull, but that did not cause much hassle while reading mails, social media posts, or even streaming videos from Netflix or Amazon Prime. But we would advise you not to exp

After FB, Netflix, more US tech giants turn to India for new apps release

Image
India is emerging as the testing and acquisition playground for global consumer technology companies , especially the so-called FAANGs, according to a veteran internet analyst. RBC Capital Markets’ Mark Mahaney, who calls himself Wall Street’s “oldest internet analyst” after covering the sector for more than two decades, said India is now more popular than markets like China because it has the same growth dynamics but with fewer regulations. As one of the largest economies and most populous countries in the world, India has turned into a testing ground for companies such as Facebook Inc., which has used it to beta-test a payments feature for WhatsApp. Netflix Inc. rolled out a mobile plan in India at 199 rupees ($2.80), much cheaper than what it charges for a basic plan elsewhere, and has created original content to capture more market share. “ India does have regulations but it doesn’t seem to be as protectionist as China,” said Mahaney. India has been considering a new law
