Observing cells' eating habits may aid cancer diagnosis, finds study

Image
A recent research has found that if we observe what cells eat, then it may be possible to diagnose and treat diseases such as cancer . In the study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, scientists have developed a new imaging technology to visualise what cells eat. The team has designed chem ical probes that light up when they attach to specific molecules that cells eat, such as glucose. Researchers used microscopes to watch cells eating glucose inside live zebrafish embryos, which are transparent and easy to observe. They found the technique also worked with human cells growing in the lab. The team said their approach could easily be adapted to look at other molecules that are important for health and disease. All cells rely on glucose and other molecules for their survival. If a cell's eating habits change, it can be a warning sign of disease. Read Complete Article

Australian health authorities have approved a new weight loss drug to help fight obesity . The weight loss drug Contrave has been listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and is intended to be used with a diet control and increased exercise, according to a media report. "There is a sector of the medical community and a sector of the Austra lian political community who regard obesity as a moral failing," he was quoted by AAP news agency. "Mo...

KidsHealth "Early puberty can be associated with an increased risk of a number of diseases as an adult, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer," said Nis Brix. Brix hopes that the study's results can be used as another motivating factor to stop smoking among women who are planning on becoming pregnant. "It is known that smoking is harmful to the unborn foetus. Smoking is, among other thin...
