Here's what you should eat if you want to live a 100 years or more

Functional medicine is a legitimate approach to live a happy, healthy and long life. It encompasses a whole-body approach and addresses the root cause of all chronic lifestyle diseases. Ageing is a result of some or all of the following factors, which can be addressed with functional medicine. Nutritional deficiencies In olden times, food eaten was whole, nutritious, freshly cooked, unprocessed and not stored for long. These days, soil is becoming deficient in nutrients and is heavily loaded with pesticides and toxins. Therefore, the lack of basic micro-nutrients is becoming too common and this is leading to disrupted metabolic pathways. Functional medicine advises paleo, keto meal plans and prescribe required nutritional supplements based on extensive blood work and other physical investigations. Toxic overload There are toxins in our food, air and water. Our body has pathways to get these toxins out, but our organs give up due to excessive accumulation of toxins and a poor l...

Here's a common link between Sleep and aging

Image
As part of a recent study, researchers have found oxidative stress as the common link between sleep and aging . The research suggests that oxidative stress leads to sleep and is also believed to be a reason why we age. It is also seen as a cause of degenerative diseases. "It's no accident that oxygen tanks carry explosion hazard labels: uncontrolled combustion is dangerous. Animals, including humans, face a similar risk when they use the oxygen they breathe to convert food into energy: imperfectly contained combustion leads to "oxidative stress" in the cell. This is believed to be a cause of aging and a culprit for the degenerative diseases that blight our later years. Our new research shows that oxidative stress also activates the neurons that control whether we go to sleep," explained Gero Miesenbock, lead researcher of the study. The team studied the regulation of sleep in fruit flies - the animal that also provided the first insight into the ...

Body size may influence women's lifespan more than men's

Image
Budget 2019 : A new study has claimed that body size -- height and weight -- of women influence their lifespan far more that it does that of men. The study was published online in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health. The findings indicate that while physical activity is linked to longevity in both sexes, the more time men spend being physically active add to their chances of reaching old age, while 60 minutes a day was associated with the best chance for women for longevity. The study also finds that while average life expectancy has risen over the past few decades, it has recently started to plateau in some developed nations, with increasing levels of obesity and physical inactivity thought to be behind the trend. While previous research has looked at the associations between weight (BMI), physical activity, and reaching old age, most combined both sexes or focused only on men. However, women and men's lifespan differ, which may be influenced by...

Painkillers during pregnancy linked to early puberty in girls

Image
Women who are in the habit of popping up over-the-counter painkillers during pregnancy could increase the risk of their daughters entering puberty earlier than normal, warns a research. The study observed that girls whose mothers consumed paracetamol during pregnancy exhibited pubertal symptoms such as breasts, pimples, menstruation, hair growth in places and unpredictable mood swings, on average, three months earlier, than the normal. These symptoms were visible even more earlier if the mother took paracetemol for more than 12 weeks during pregnancy. "While entering puberty one-and-a-half to three months earlier may seem unimportant, when taken together with the frequent use of paracetamol during pregnancy, our findings ought to make people take notice," said Andreas Ernst, a post-doctoral student from Aarhus University in Denmark. "Our results are certainly not the decisive factor that should change current practice, but the perception of paracetamol as ...

Exercise can help boost memory through bone hormone: Study

Image
Researchers have identified a naturally occurring bone hormone that can potentially reverse memory loss in the ageing brain through exercise . The study on the hormone osteocalcin lends new insight into how lifestyle changes that affect the body, such as exercise, could positively affect the brain. "Nearly everyone will experience age-related memory loss in their lifetime, so it is incredibly important to understand its causes and identify ways to mitigate it," said Eric R. Kandel, Professor at the Columbia University. "With today's study, we are not only building a detailed understanding of how age-related memory loss originates in the brain, we've shown how osteocalcin interacts with key proteins in the brain to boost memory." For many years, memory loss was treated as a singular disorder. But scientists have now begun to realise that Alzheimer's disease, begins in a part of the brain called the entorhinal cortex, which lies at th...

Make changes in diet to fight ageing

Image
The key to ageing gracefully is simple - eat healthy . So make changes in your diet instead of going for Botox for wrinkle treatment, say experts. Tanu Arora, Head Of Department - Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital, and Zodi, senior dietician, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, have a few suggestions: * Include certain foods in diet which are rich in vitamins like riboflavin, niacin and cyanocobalamin. Exclude poor quality of food which causes inflammation and ultimately affects skin. * Hydrate the body so as to remove the toxins from the body. * Skin collagen gets damaged when there is high consumption of sugar and processed carbohydrates, while foods like fruits and vegetables are good for skin. * Deep fried food can add to inflammation. On the other hand, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat dairy and lean protein can help fight inflammation. * Lettuce, broccoli, spinach, tomato,  watermelon, grapefruit, gua...
