Kerala floods LIVE: CM to visit relief camps; discuss UAE aid with Centre


Kerala Floods Live: Kerala floods: With rains easing and water receding in some areas of flood-ravaged Kerala, people have started returning to their homes. However, as the state is set to incur losses to the tune of Rs 20 billion (Rs 2,000 crore), the entire country has come together to help the state limp back to normalcy. Chief ministers from various states have also announced aid from their relief funds.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday will conduct an in-person review of the functioning of relief camps in Chengannur, Kozhencherry, Alappuzha, North Paravoor and Chalakudy. He also said that the the state government will initiate high-level discussions with the Centre to enable the transfer of funds from the UAE government in the wake of the floods in the state.

"The National Disaster Management policy provides provisions to accept voluntary offers from foreign nations in the wake of calamities," the chief minister said in response to reports of the Centre's reluctance to accept UAE aid worth Rs 7 billion (Rs 700 crore), according to ANI.

Over 350 people have lost their lives so far and about 1.078 million people, including 212,000 women and 100,000 children under 12, have seen sheltered in 3,200 relief camps.
